Car Fire at Bourbon Pump Handle

I hadn`t been home from work at Walmart very long on Tuesday, February 11th, 2020, when I heard tones drop for Bourbon Fire Department, for a car fire inside the car wash at Bourbon Pump Handle, so I grabbed my camera and drove up there. Figured if it was inside the car wash, it should have been toned as a structure fire instead…Sullivan Fire Department was toned to assist them shortly after, and I arrived just ahead of the Bourbon Fire Department, to find a passenger car fully involved in the engine compartment, parked at an angle right behind the main building but short of the car wash building entrance….

Bourbon`s ambulance crew was there when I arrived and police as well, waiting for the fire truck to arrive, which they did shortly after. There was a lot of heat coming off the front of the car and it looked like flammable liquid was on fire under the engine as well by the look of the flames…

…two young Bourbon firefighters, Allen Noltkamper in the black gear, and Noah Thomas in the yellow gear, suited up as the hoselines were being charged…there was some type of problem and Noah went to check on it…

The line was charged and Allen began bleeding the air out of the hoseline as Noah returned to assist him in the attack on the fire…

they did a great job getting it knocked down and then moved to the front of the car once the flames and heat were removed…

Sullivan Fire Department arrived shortly after I took this photo above and began assisting, Tony Boero also assisted with a pry bar to open the hood on the car…

It took awhile but they finally got the hood open and Bourbon firefighters continued to hose down the car and engine block…

…and a few people even got a little wet in the process near the end….not Tony tho. 🙂 Good work by all who were there !!

Wow What a Busy Few Days of Busy…January 2020

Area firefighters were kept busy from mid January to mid February 2020 and weather apparently was only to blame one evening. On January 22nd, Sullivan Fire and EMS were dispatched to a report of a head on mva with entrapment and fire, at the 231.4 mile marker, just east of the Stanton overpass, with both vehicles coming to rest in the median. Once responding, Pumper 854`s crew was advised by Washco Dispatch that this was a tractor trailer possibly carrying haz mat involved in a head on collision with another vehicle, and heavy black smoke was observed briefly by firefighters enroute to the scene. Washco advised the truck was believed to be transporting a cargo of paint thinner and St Clair Fire Department was responding as well. As I drove to the scene on the North Service Road, I observed some smoke initially and then no more as I got closer to the scene. I parked at a nearby business with permission from the owner, who advised what happened below his buildings on the westbound lanes…that a westbound pickup truck had strayed off the right shoulder and then crossed back across both wb lanes, into and across the median, striking the front drivers side corner of the eastbound semi…ripping off the fuel tanks of the semi, causing the diesel fuel tanks to rupture, spill, and catch fire, only igniting the fuel which spread to the cab and front of the semi trailer only, the semi coming to rest facing eastbound in the median about 200 feet east of the collision point. The pickup came to rest in the median, also facing eastbound, near the point of collision. Traffic in both directions came to a stop in all four lanes, and good samaritans, armed with fire extinguishers, knocked down the heavy fire that enveloped the cab of the semi and removed the truck driver from the cab as well, all in a matter of a few minutes and before emergency personnel arrived on scene…when Pumper 854 and MOBAP Ambulance arrived, they stopped at the pickup and began extrication of the driver immediately…

…the medics climbed inside the pickup to take care of the patient while firefighters began working two lines of extrication tools to remove the patient….Sullivan firefighters also responded two tankers to the scene and they sped on by the pickup to the tractor trailer 200 feet east, where firefighters set up a pre-connect hoseline to address any other fire concerns and to cool down the fuselage…

…the semi driver was taken to the eastbound shoulder to wait for ems arrival and an air medical helicopter was requested soon after for the semi driver…

St Clair Fire Department arrived soon after with a pumper and ambulance from St Clair Ambulance District following, and their firefighters assisted Sullivan firefighters with extrication at the pickup scene….

…while Chief Sullivan of St Clair Fire, assisted more Sullivan firefighters with the semi and trailer damage…Fires 2020-0122 414AVI MVA Head On EB 44 231.4 MM Air Unit Lifts Off With Semi Driver

St Clair and Sullivan firefighters systematically had to cut the cab of the pickup with the tools and remove it in order to safely remove the driver from the wreckage…

Eastbound traffic was backed up for miles to the west….

A couple of passersby took photos prior to the arrival of emergency personnel that showed the fire enveloping the semi and the westbound lanes, and it did look like the pickup may have had a smoke or steam cloud in front of it…

The second photo taken by a passerby, was apparently taken east of the pickup in the median and from the volume of fire present, those passersby that extinguished the fire and removed the truck driver, should be commended for doing a GREAT job with both details….

Later that night, Sullivan firefighters were kicked out early in the hours of January 23rd for a vehicle accident involving a Semi that slammed into the columns under the James K. Schatz Memorial Bridge on the eastbound 44 side. This is just a few blocks north of me so I drove down and arrived right behind the Fire Department and discovered one of the worst mva`s involving a semi…turns out the semi cab struck one of the columns and the collision separated the cab from the frame, separated the engine from the nose of the cab, ripped the fuselage away from under the frame, ripped the axle, wheels, and tires from the frame, and turned the trailer completely around, facing westbound on the shoulder…unbelievable !! The motor was deposited on the shoulder in front of the trailer`s fifty wheel connection, on the highway side of the passenger cabin. Fuel was strewn all over the South Service Road, adding to the slick surface of the roadway from the icing that had occurred earlier in the day and evening. The back of the passenger cabin was sitting up against the second column under the bridge, but was not wrapped around it, and the driver had crawled out of the cab on his own as police officers arrived, but his driving mate was still inside and had to be extricated by Sullivan Firefighters….

…and then looking east from the column that was initially struck…bet those troopers were shaking their heads in wonder, too….

Firefighters were able to finally free the second driver from the wreckage, he was holding his arm when they walked him to the stretcher, no serious injuries to either driver. Good work by all.

The next morning, January 24th, around 8 am, Sullivan Fire, Police, and MOBAP Ambulance, were dispatched to a residential first alarm, house fire, at 04 East Euclid, on the corner of Church and Euclid, and on arrival of EMS heavy smoke was coming from the eaves of the residence. I arrived as Pumper 854 arrived and parked on the Church Street side of the house…

Firefighters were packing up and preparing to enter the residence as Pumper 814 arrived on scene and prepared to hook to the hydrant near where I parked…

…and a few minutes later, as Rescue 816 arrived, the smoke coming from the residence, multiplied exponentially….

…and then it became apparent that firefighters inside the house were getting water on the fire because the smoke dissipated quite a bit….

Sgt Jeff Rohrer and his officers were doing a great job of handling traffic flow around the scene…

..and a few minutes later, St Clair Fire District arrived on scene and assisted firefighters with the fire in the attic…

Within the next 30 minutes firefighters had the fire completely knocked down and began overhaul operations as I left the scene. Turns out the residence was not occupied and was possibly undergoing rennovation. Another good job by all.

Second Week of January Heavy Sleet and Snow 2020

Sometimes the Farmers Almanac is right and sometimes, Thank God, it`s not…the second week of January 2020, it got things right most of the week. I bet my buddy Brian Beckett tho, is glad that it doesn`t predict mishaps like folks driving through his garage doors at both of his Express Care Valvoline businesses. I was doing some computer work at my desk the morning of January 3rd when I heard police dispatched to a report of a car running into his business on the South Service Road, so I grabbed my camera and drove down there, to find that a car had pulled into the first bay from the back and instead of stopping, the driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, clipped the technician as he was diving out of the way, and then went right through the front garage door…when I got there, MOBAP Ambulance personnel were on scene with Sullivan PD and Sullivan Fire Department was responding…

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt and the techs were busy cleaning up the damage, ems checked out the tech clipped by the car and the driver of the car, and as Brian stated later, doors can be replaced and insurance takes care of it….

Poor Brian tho…the same day at about the same time, at his business in Rolla, another vehicle did nearly the same thing up there. I feel for ya buddy.

One week later, we had ice and snow on the 10th of January, resulting in a few accidents, one reported as a rollover in the median in front of Du Kum Inn, shot this one from the parking lot next to the Zephyr station….

Fire and EMS soon after, were then dispatched to another MVA in the eastbound lanes of I-44 at Stanton, which was also a non-injury accident and both agencies were soon disregarded…I shot photos of the snow coming down as I drove back to Sullivan from Stanton, flakes coming down were big as your hands….

First Alarm Residential Structure Fire Hwy 185 South of Sullivan December 29th

Soon after darkness fell on December 29th, Sullivan Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Box Elder Road, which is a small residential area across from the site of the old Kellter Tower on Hwy 185 South.  Firefighters arrived to find a mobile home well involved and the trailer tightly closed up, appeared to be abandoned and they were having a lot of difficulty making access to it when I arrived and started taking photos.

…what you cannot see in the photos above are the firefighters trying to make entry, because they are inside that heavy smoke cloud to the right of the fire….the next video shows why portable lighting was brought in soon after to light things up for the firefighters while they chopped holes in the exterior skin walls to gain entry to the fire….

..they did eventually make it down to my end of the trailer, still trying to find a way to enter the trailer, and discovered the trailer still had electric power service.

Fires 2019-1229 Mobile Home Fire 10037 Box Elder Road 3

they were able to chop some holes in the thin walls of the trailer giving them some limited access to the fire raging inside, while other firefighters used a chainsaw to cut brush around the east end of the trailer and set up lighting. Both sets of crews here tonight, really got a good workout in…

Fires 2019-1229 10037 Box Elder Road Mobile Home Fire Vid 41

…rain was falling during the time they were fighting the fire and continued through the night as well. Firefighters were able to knock down the flames inside the trailer through the holes punched in the outside skin of the mobile home and bring the fire under control. I left the scene soon after this.

Midway Hotel Structure Fire, Cuba, Missouri December 13th, 2019

Shortly after midnight Friday morning, December 13th, 2019, I woke up to hear Bourbon Fire Department being dispatched to assist Cuba with a commercial structure fire at the old Midway Motel near the intersection of Hwy 19 and Old 66…the original hotel building, which faced Old Highway 66 on the northeast corner of Highway 19,  was torn down a couple of years ago. It was once owned by Noel Piccard, a Blues Hockey Player many years ago…and this  building was a two wing section that sat half a block north of the original structure and had been used as apartments in more recent years. Cuba received the call at 12:06 am and arrived to find the south facing wing totally engulfed in heavy fire, called for a second alarm shortly after…I arrived right behind Sullivan`s Pumper 854 and observed the west facing wing fully involved….

…and Cuba firefighters deploying their 75 foot Ladder Truck Nozzle to fight the heavy fire from the structure….

The video above shows a firefighter getting a little too close to the fire and getting caught and called out for it…fighting fire is a dangerous enough job without stunts like this. In over 45 years of photographing fires, I have seen too many things like this and Thank God no one has gotten seriously burned or hurt, but the potential is definitely there to do so.

By now the fire had reached the end of the road, burning as far down the wing as it could, and was beginning to wind down…

Sullivan Fire District sent a second crew to assist and they arrived shortly after, as well as crews from Owensville Fire District….

I left the scene shortly after Sullivan`s reinforcements arrival, all firefighters on scene had a lot of mopping up to do…I heard later in the week that the fire was deemed to be suspicious and an investigation was underway. As usual, Cuba Fire Department did a great job maintaining control of the fire with good assistance from Cuba PD, Crawford County Sheriffs Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Sullivan Fire Department Transports Santa Claus 2019

I was again able to photograph Santa Claus being transported to different areas of Sullivan by Sullivan Fire Department…on December 10th, they drove by my house on Elmont Road going to the north side of town…

Cran Spindler`s Fire Department Funeral Nov 30th, 2019

When I returned from my fall trip to Arkansas, Mom told me that Cran Spindler, a good firefighter friend of mine, was not doing well and was in hospice care at a residential care center in St Clair. I stopped by there to see him one day on my way to Washington County, and found him sound asleep in his bed there, so I visited with his daughters and a granddaughter instead. It was a good visit, although I would have liked to have talked to Cran as well, but the sad fact is, he never woke up from that sleep and had been asleep for days when I stopped by. His funeral was set for November 30th at New Testament Baptist Church, where my Mom now attends Church as well. She told me that Cran had been attending regular there for a few years and always sat on the back row, talked to her each time she saw him.

Cran was a great guy, he had joined the fire department after Dad did, so sometime in the 1960`s he joined the department as a firefighter, but he was mainly well known for his talents in frying up fish squares for the famous Firemen`s Fish Sandwiches at the Firemen`s Picnic Carnival and Meramac Community Fair. Cran had many stories to tell to anyone that would listen, and many of the younger guys highly respected and listened to him. Too often these days, the younger generation doesn`t take the time to talk to the older guys, listen to their stories, and learn from them…I was glad to see that the younger firefighters of Sullivan Fire District not only had high respect for Cran and his accomplishments, but did take the time to talk and listen to him. Hopefully that trend will continue as many things can be learned from the older generations. Sullivan Fire Department and Bourbon Fire Department came to pay their respects and gave him a good send off….

Dramatic Sunset Skies October 15th, 2019

As I came out of Cracker Barrel after having supper on October 15th, I noticed the beauty in the skies and realized we were in for a gorgeous sunset, after a nice rain as well…I shot this one right there in the parking lot with my phone camera….

….and then drove up behind the restaurant, to the parking lot of Sunny Jim Bottomley City Park, to shoot it again with my phone….

…and then switched over to my Nikon Camera….

…but this story doesn`t end there, just as the sunset didn`t end there…I drove over to Walmart to do some shopping and when I came out…the sunset had morphed into an ever better one….

…simply….GORGEOUS !!

Dramatic Clouds & Weather at Geode Fest 2019

The majority of my trip to Geode Fest 2019 can be read and viewed on my other site, https://www.jwjrocks.com if you want to see what all went on up there this year. The one thing that really stood out this trip over the last few years, was the dramatic weather we had every day up there. Keokuk, Iowa, where Geode Fest originated due to the many geodes found within a 70 mile radius of Keokuk itself, and Hamilton, Illinois, where Geode Fest has been held for the past several years due to the present location, Chaney Creek Boat Access, being a much larger area to hold such a huge venue consisting of parking for many, vendor space, and access in and out of the parking area for rockhounds going to dig locations and returning from same.  Somehow, that specific area up there wound up in a storm track that went on for about four days solid, storm after storm after storm…with heavy rain, severe lightning, hail at times, and a few radar detected tornadoes at night, no less. Definitely saw and photographed some impressive storms and rode out a few of those radar detected tornado storms with some apprehension. I drove up there a day early, mainly to visit with some good rockhound friends who were setting up as vendors at Chaney Creek Access, and took some druse quartz up to a mineral dealer friend of John O, who was interested in purchasing some good stuff…for the most part, that meeting went well with a few bumps explained in more detail in my story on my other website. On the first morning of the event, Friday morning, September 27th, I got up early and drove over to Chaney Creek Access to get signed in early before the main crowd arrived…on the way over there, however, it was obvious there was a huge storm brewing behind me so I pulled down to the Mississippi River boat ramp after crossing the river on the Hwy 136 bridge, which is just below the Lock and Dam…the boat access is just below the Lock and Dam as well and right across from the main Lock in the channel. This way I could shoot the storm and get the bridge and water reflections too…

Geode Fest 2019 AVI 81 Fri Morning Storm Approaching From West

Geode Fest 2019 AVI 91 2nd Video of Approaching Storm Fri Morning

Very impressive storm to say the least, pretty even in some respects, the contrast between the deep yellow skies to the north and the deep blues of the storm to the southwest, and the lighter colors in between the two…at the very least, this one set the stage for the day for us rockhounds and got us somewhat prepared for what was ahead of us…more storms, many with serious lightning and some with hail…luckily I was able to dodge the hail storms. The next storm for me was the two that came right across the farm south of Hamilton and pounded down upon us with unbelievably heavy lightning soon after we got down to the bottom of the hill and in the creekwater…what a great place to be with lightning bolts zapping all over the place high above ya….

…most of us didn`t stick around there long, we def got out of the water since water and electricity are not a good combination. By that time I had two buckets full of geodes and I was happy and soaked, and like many others, I still had to get out of there thru a muddy soybean field…I wasn`t worried, as I have a great truck with four wheel drive and I did get out of there just fine…I was more worried for the farmer and his soybean fields than anything else…

..it was storm city the rest of the day so I decided, once I went back to the hotel and got changed into dryer clothes, then drove to Walmart and replaced my wet and soggy boots, to spend the rest of the afternoon at Chaney Creek Access and simply visit with rockhound and vendor friends. It stormed and rained all day, so I was glad I decided not to go back out in that mess. My buddy, Chuck Reed, drove up that afternoon from St Louis County, to join the fun and later that evening, all of us friends decided to drive up the hill to Hamilton to the Hamilton Diner. Right before we left, we heard the tornado warning sirens sounding across the river in Keokuk, and alerts were hitting our cellphones right and left, advising of radar detected tornadoes in storms approaching from the Kirksville area…that storm track I was talking about earlier. On our arrival at the Diner, everyone went inside but me…I grabbed my camera and started shooting the storm clouds out in the parking lot, between the Diner and Dairy Queen next door. A local firefighter, who is also a rockhound, was just leaving the diner with his family, they stopped and began shooting it as well and then talked about going down to Chaney Creek Access Parking Lot as it would provide better shelter in the valley from the storm, he said. Here is how the clouds looked in the direction of Chaney Creek to the north…

…what happened was a huge shelf cloud formed up and stretched across Hamilton for about half a mile…dramatic, neat, and scarey all rolled into one…

Geode Fest 2019 AVI 137 Sat Evening Storm Coming In With Tornado Warning

As you can imagine, it rained all night long, 9 inches of rain recorded by the local authorities and so the next morning, the organizers of Geode Fest called off all morning digs and decided they would make a decison by 11 am for the afternoon digs. There are three dig locations on the Fox River just west and northwest of Keokuk, all three are located on Amish Farms, and the Amish folks up there are some of the nicest folks you would ever meet, since finding out about Geode Fest and geode lovin rockhounds in general, they have become quite a fixture at Geode Fest each year. They don`t sit back and do nothing while geode hunters collect geodes from the river and its banks, either, they pitch in to help the rockhounds all the time. Many of the Amish men will hook up their farm draft horses to wagons and haul buckets full of geodes to the vehicles of rockhounds, or to the parking lot, which is a tremendous help to rockhounds as those geodes are big and heavy or even a bucket full of small ones can add up, weight wise, pretty quickly, and navigating those river banks and river waters with a current, can wear one out pretty quickly. The Amish womenfolk stay busy too, many of them are excellent bakers of fine food, some of them setting up baked goods sales tents in the parking lots at their farms and they usually have home made ice cream for sale, too. I speak from personal experience when I say how good of bakers they are. 🙂

This year, when the waters of the Fox River rose up bank full on Saturday morning, after 9 inches of rainfall Friday night, eliminating hunts at those three Amish Farms, the Amish folks kicked into high gear, bringing large geodes in trailers and their baked goods, to the parking lot at Chaney Creek Access. Pictured below in the straw hat and pretty blue shirt, is Amos, one of the farmowners, he brought the trailer full of geodes in on Saturday morning, after helping the womenfolk set up their baked goods tent early that morning….

They even brought a huge five gallon bucket of home made ice cream to sell to ice cream fans and when they ran out, they made up even more right there on the spot. Very nice folks, I have met a few in past years and met even more of them this time around. Pictured below is Amos` little brother, working the ice cream tent with his wife….

Saturday afternoon digs, they decided, would go on and should be fine, the weather report looked like a break was coming our way so they allowed hunters to go hunting at one of three locations…John, Chuck, and I decided to go out to the newest location, a farm that John had scouted last year at the request of the farm owner, who we met last year as well. Same creek as the day before, but well known for snowball type geodes…water there had been above bank full that morning, but by the time we arrived, it was down a good ways, but with a strong current. I had better boots by this time and my footing was much more stable with them…this is a photo of Railroad Creek there, showing the strong current and geodes laying everywhere…

We did quite well in the afternoon and the weather returned that evening, but not with a vengence…luckily we didn`t have any problems like this….

…a tornado that occurred earlier in the springtime and totalled out this surburban, which was not insured at the time, due to its age. The next morning, some of us drove over to Wayland and went agate hunting at a gravel plant there, with friends in the Central Iowa Mineral Cub…it was a bit foggy, but otherwise not a bad day…

Chuck and I returned to our homes that afternoon and the entire area remained in that foggy / rainy cloud cover all day…when I finally emerged from it, back into blue skies and sunshine just north of Hannibal, it felt like I was leaving a totally different world and returning to normal…I was soooo glad to see blue skies once again and later that evening at Cracker Barrel for supper in Sullivan, a beautiful sunset in the western skies….

WOW, what a weekend that was !!
