Cran Spindler`s Fire Department Funeral Nov 30th, 2019

When I returned from my fall trip to Arkansas, Mom told me that Cran Spindler, a good firefighter friend of mine, was not doing well and was in hospice care at a residential care center in St Clair. I stopped by there to see him one day on my way to Washington County, and found him sound asleep in his bed there, so I visited with his daughters and a granddaughter instead. It was a good visit, although I would have liked to have talked to Cran as well, but the sad fact is, he never woke up from that sleep and had been asleep for days when I stopped by. His funeral was set for November 30th at New Testament Baptist Church, where my Mom now attends Church as well. She told me that Cran had been attending regular there for a few years and always sat on the back row, talked to her each time she saw him.

Cran was a great guy, he had joined the fire department after Dad did, so sometime in the 1960`s he joined the department as a firefighter, but he was mainly well known for his talents in frying up fish squares for the famous Firemen`s Fish Sandwiches at the Firemen`s Picnic Carnival and Meramac Community Fair. Cran had many stories to tell to anyone that would listen, and many of the younger guys highly respected and listened to him. Too often these days, the younger generation doesn`t take the time to talk to the older guys, listen to their stories, and learn from them…I was glad to see that the younger firefighters of Sullivan Fire District not only had high respect for Cran and his accomplishments, but did take the time to talk and listen to him. Hopefully that trend will continue as many things can be learned from the older generations. Sullivan Fire Department and Bourbon Fire Department came to pay their respects and gave him a good send off….
