Dramatic Sunset Skies October 15th, 2019

As I came out of Cracker Barrel after having supper on October 15th, I noticed the beauty in the skies and realized we were in for a gorgeous sunset, after a nice rain as well…I shot this one right there in the parking lot with my phone camera….

….and then drove up behind the restaurant, to the parking lot of Sunny Jim Bottomley City Park, to shoot it again with my phone….

…and then switched over to my Nikon Camera….

Sunset After Rain Shower 2019-1015 Behind Cracker Barrel

…but this story doesn`t end there, just as the sunset didn`t end there…I drove over to Walmart to do some shopping and when I came out…the sunset had morphed into an ever better one….

…simply….GORGEOUS !!

Dramatic Clouds & Weather at Geode Fest 2019

The majority of my trip to Geode Fest 2019 can be read and viewed on my other site, https://www.jwjrocks.com if you want to see what all went on up there this year. The one thing that really stood out this trip over the last few years, was the dramatic weather we had every day up there. Keokuk, Iowa, where Geode Fest originated due to the many geodes found within a 70 mile radius of Keokuk itself, and Hamilton, Illinois, where Geode Fest has been held for the past several years due to the present location, Chaney Creek Boat Access, being a much larger area to hold such a huge venue consisting of parking for many, vendor space, and access in and out of the parking area for rockhounds going to dig locations and returning from same.  Somehow, that specific area up there wound up in a storm track that went on for about four days solid, storm after storm after storm…with heavy rain, severe lightning, hail at times, and a few radar detected tornadoes at night, no less. Definitely saw and photographed some impressive storms and rode out a few of those radar detected tornado storms with some apprehension. I drove up there a day early, mainly to visit with some good rockhound friends who were setting up as vendors at Chaney Creek Access, and took some druse quartz up to a mineral dealer friend of John O, who was interested in purchasing some good stuff…for the most part, that meeting went well with a few bumps explained in more detail in my story on my other website. On the first morning of the event, Friday morning, September 27th, I got up early and drove over to Chaney Creek Access to get signed in early before the main crowd arrived…on the way over there, however, it was obvious there was a huge storm brewing behind me so I pulled down to the Mississippi River boat ramp after crossing the river on the Hwy 136 bridge, which is just below the Lock and Dam…the boat access is just below the Lock and Dam as well and right across from the main Lock in the channel. This way I could shoot the storm and get the bridge and water reflections too…

Geode Fest 2019 AVI 81 Fri Morning Storm Approaching From West

Geode Fest 2019 AVI 91 2nd Video of Approaching Storm Fri Morning

Very impressive storm to say the least, pretty even in some respects, the contrast between the deep yellow skies to the north and the deep blues of the storm to the southwest, and the lighter colors in between the two…at the very least, this one set the stage for the day for us rockhounds and got us somewhat prepared for what was ahead of us…more storms, many with serious lightning and some with hail…luckily I was able to dodge the hail storms. The next storm for me was the two that came right across the farm south of Hamilton and pounded down upon us with unbelievably heavy lightning soon after we got down to the bottom of the hill and in the creekwater…what a great place to be with lightning bolts zapping all over the place high above ya….

…most of us didn`t stick around there long, we def got out of the water since water and electricity are not a good combination. By that time I had two buckets full of geodes and I was happy and soaked, and like many others, I still had to get out of there thru a muddy soybean field…I wasn`t worried, as I have a great truck with four wheel drive and I did get out of there just fine…I was more worried for the farmer and his soybean fields than anything else…

..it was storm city the rest of the day so I decided, once I went back to the hotel and got changed into dryer clothes, then drove to Walmart and replaced my wet and soggy boots, to spend the rest of the afternoon at Chaney Creek Access and simply visit with rockhound and vendor friends. It stormed and rained all day, so I was glad I decided not to go back out in that mess. My buddy, Chuck Reed, drove up that afternoon from St Louis County, to join the fun and later that evening, all of us friends decided to drive up the hill to Hamilton to the Hamilton Diner. Right before we left, we heard the tornado warning sirens sounding across the river in Keokuk, and alerts were hitting our cellphones right and left, advising of radar detected tornadoes in storms approaching from the Kirksville area…that storm track I was talking about earlier. On our arrival at the Diner, everyone went inside but me…I grabbed my camera and started shooting the storm clouds out in the parking lot, between the Diner and Dairy Queen next door. A local firefighter, who is also a rockhound, was just leaving the diner with his family, they stopped and began shooting it as well and then talked about going down to Chaney Creek Access Parking Lot as it would provide better shelter in the valley from the storm, he said. Here is how the clouds looked in the direction of Chaney Creek to the north…

…what happened was a huge shelf cloud formed up and stretched across Hamilton for about half a mile…dramatic, neat, and scarey all rolled into one…

Geode Fest 2019 AVI 137 Sat Evening Storm Coming In With Tornado Warning

As you can imagine, it rained all night long, 9 inches of rain recorded by the local authorities and so the next morning, the organizers of Geode Fest called off all morning digs and decided they would make a decison by 11 am for the afternoon digs. There are three dig locations on the Fox River just west and northwest of Keokuk, all three are located on Amish Farms, and the Amish folks up there are some of the nicest folks you would ever meet, since finding out about Geode Fest and geode lovin rockhounds in general, they have become quite a fixture at Geode Fest each year. They don`t sit back and do nothing while geode hunters collect geodes from the river and its banks, either, they pitch in to help the rockhounds all the time. Many of the Amish men will hook up their farm draft horses to wagons and haul buckets full of geodes to the vehicles of rockhounds, or to the parking lot, which is a tremendous help to rockhounds as those geodes are big and heavy or even a bucket full of small ones can add up, weight wise, pretty quickly, and navigating those river banks and river waters with a current, can wear one out pretty quickly. The Amish womenfolk stay busy too, many of them are excellent bakers of fine food, some of them setting up baked goods sales tents in the parking lots at their farms and they usually have home made ice cream for sale, too. I speak from personal experience when I say how good of bakers they are. 🙂

This year, when the waters of the Fox River rose up bank full on Saturday morning, after 9 inches of rainfall Friday night, eliminating hunts at those three Amish Farms, the Amish folks kicked into high gear, bringing large geodes in trailers and their baked goods, to the parking lot at Chaney Creek Access. Pictured below in the straw hat and pretty blue shirt, is Amos, one of the farmowners, he brought the trailer full of geodes in on Saturday morning, after helping the womenfolk set up their baked goods tent early that morning….

They even brought a huge five gallon bucket of home made ice cream to sell to ice cream fans and when they ran out, they made up even more right there on the spot. Very nice folks, I have met a few in past years and met even more of them this time around. Pictured below is Amos` little brother, working the ice cream tent with his wife….

Saturday afternoon digs, they decided, would go on and should be fine, the weather report looked like a break was coming our way so they allowed hunters to go hunting at one of three locations…John, Chuck, and I decided to go out to the newest location, a farm that John had scouted last year at the request of the farm owner, who we met last year as well. Same creek as the day before, but well known for snowball type geodes…water there had been above bank full that morning, but by the time we arrived, it was down a good ways, but with a strong current. I had better boots by this time and my footing was much more stable with them…this is a photo of Railroad Creek there, showing the strong current and geodes laying everywhere…

We did quite well in the afternoon and the weather returned that evening, but not with a vengence…luckily we didn`t have any problems like this….

…a tornado that occurred earlier in the springtime and totalled out this surburban, which was not insured at the time, due to its age. The next morning, some of us drove over to Wayland and went agate hunting at a gravel plant there, with friends in the Central Iowa Mineral Cub…it was a bit foggy, but otherwise not a bad day…

Chuck and I returned to our homes that afternoon and the entire area remained in that foggy / rainy cloud cover all day…when I finally emerged from it, back into blue skies and sunshine just north of Hannibal, it felt like I was leaving a totally different world and returning to normal…I was soooo glad to see blue skies once again and later that evening at Cracker Barrel for supper in Sullivan, a beautiful sunset in the western skies….

WOW, what a weekend that was !!

Came Upon a Car Fire On My Way Home From Work Near St Clair

On September 21st, I was on my way home from work at the golf course, and as I rounded the bend on westbound I-44 approaching the straight stretch that runs along the old St Clair Airport, I spotted a car on fire, on the shoulder of eastbound 44. It looked like a gray colored Pontiac and heavy flames were rolling out of the passenger cabin of the car.

Despite heavy westbound traffic behind me, I pulled over to the shoulder and called 911…which rang three times and then routed me to the non-emergency number of Franklin County Sheriffs Office, a number I know well…never had that happen before…a radio operator answered the phone and I told her what was going on, described the car…no I didn`t see anyone around the car or inside the car, and she then told me St Clair Fire Department had been dispatched and disconnected the call…I imagine they were getting multiple calls on it and had limited call takers or dispatchers on duty to answer the incoming calls. No worries, help was rolling so I took a few photos…I had to shoot fast due to the heavy traffic passing me, insuring that I got a few good shots…I decided to stay inside my truck and shoot from there…

…two shots later, the car exploded and I was able to capture it because I was shooting non-stop….

…luckily no one was passing by when it exploded and St Clair wasn`t up on it with their firefighters, either…

A few minutes later, I heard St Clair Fire Department responding and soon they were pulling up, not sure if they saw the explosion as they approached or not…

Fires 2019-0921 EB 44 241.6 MM St Clair Car Fire With Explosion

…but they did seem to approach with caution, so it`s quite possible they did see it. At any rate, they put a quick knockdown on the fire after a second explosion occurred as they were walking up…between the next two photos you can tell, but they wisely moved off into the grass off the shoulder and made their initial attack from there…

…and just as they were making progress on their attack from the grassy area, the second firefighter on the hoseline, had trouble with his airpack and had to stop and make some changes before they could advance…

and by doing so, the nozzleman was able to knock down the heavy fire inside the cabin by focusing on spraying water through the burned out back windshield, maintaining a safe distance from the car…

Job Well Done, St Clair Fire District !!

First Alarm Commercial Structure Fire Sullivan Precision Metal Sept 8th

I was taking it easy on Sunday, September 8th about noon, when the tones dropped for Sullivan Fire Department, toning them out for a commercial structure fire at Sullivan Precision Metal on Franklin Street. I drove north on Elmont Road and turned up Dunsford Drive to come in the back way, observing light brown smoke along the rear wall of the building as I drove up on the factory building. This factory sits underneath one of Sullivan`s water towers on the north side of town….

Sullivan Fire Department arrived soon after in Pumper 854….

Video 237 Comm Structure Fire Sullivan Precision Metal Finishing 2019-0908

I was still near the back of the building when Jim Bartle, Sullivan Independent News Editor, arrived and I told him what I knew about the fire so far…the smoke had a strong electrical odor, but no one at that time was sure what was burning inside the building as crews were just starting to enter the east side of the building near the loading bay, where additional crews were beginning to arrive as we watched…

…here you see Pumper 814 arriving, hooking to the hydrant across the street from the building and preparing to lay a supply line in to Pumper 854….Ray Enloe coordinated with incoming crews outside the building while his Captain and crew operated inside the building…

Bourbon Fire Department arrived soon after and were directed to the back of the building, under the water tower…

…and then Ladder 852 arrived…

…and then the interior crew came out for additional bottles of air….

St Clair Fire Department arrived next with their Ladder Truck and were directed by Ray to the rear of the building as well…

Video 253 Comm Structure Fire Sullivan Prec Metal Finishing 2019-0908

By this time, crews were under the impression that this may be some type of boiler fire near the back of the building…shortly after St Clair arrived, command was passed to Ray outside the building….Ray had Bourbon and St Clair position at the rear of the building to anchor that side in case fire breached the back wall…

Joe Thurmond arrived soon and went inside the building with firefighters to check on a transformer near the rear of the building as well…

…and then Joe came out of the building to update Ray on the fire inside…

Video 293 Comm Structure Fire Sullivan Prec Metal Finishing 2019-0908

..and more crews exited the building…here Jim Grimm and his crew exit the building to replace their air bottles….

…and then re-enter the building once again…

…soon after, additional crews arrived from Union and Beaufort-Leslie Fire Districts…

Video 312 Comm Structure Fire Sullivan Prec Metal Finishing 2019-0908

…soon after their arrival, interior crews located the source of the fire and knocked it down. Some serious ventilation work happened afterward as the entire building was filled with the obnoxious odor brown smoke, that required air masks worn and several positive pressure ventilation fans set up to air out the building, restoring visibility and safe conditions inside the building for workers as well as firefighters.

As it was, turned out to be an electrical transfomer inside the building that caught fire, which explained the odor of the smoke. Job well done by all who responded !!

Car Fire on Pipeline Road July 30th, 2019

I remember this fire like it was yesterday…I was out in front of the fire response by a few miles but when it was dispatched, I didn`t catch the location clearly, thought they gave it as Sappington Bridge Road past Pipeline Road. I spotted smoke before I turned off Hwy D, but from that far away, could not tell if it was on Sappington Bridge Road or Pipeline Road and as I crossed the Meramac River, I lost the smoke completely. I drove on down Sappington Bridge Road til the road started down the big hill toward Greens Branch Creek, then turned around and turned right on Pipeline Road, arriving behind Chief Eric. I parked off the road as much as possible, the brush gets close to the road there, and walked up to the scene to photograph the Kia sedan, fully involved….

Pumper 854 arrived soon after and firefighters pulled hoselines and prepared for battle…

…and then Davey Sumpter, on the nozzle, and Captain Dave Konys, began their attack…

…and then Chase Robertson walked up to assist with a haligan tool to open the car hood…

…and soon they had the fire out…in the next video, I was talking with a couple of firefighters about how the truck strobe lights were reflecting on the fire coats and even Chief Eric`s vest in a wild and colorful way…strong strobes for sure to be working that way in broad and bright daylight…

MVA Under East Overpass July 28th, 2019

I drove down the North Service Road and parked out in front of the Pilot/Flying J Truckstop, to photograph the multi-vehicle mva under the East Overpass. There were at least three cars, one suv, one pickup, and one semi involved, looked like a few of them sustained damage from a chain reaction type action behind the main event. The semi was up against some of the columns under the overpass when I arrived…Sullivan Fire Department was on scene as well as MoBap EMS and Missouri Highway Patrol Troopers arrived soon after..several of them. Eastbound traffic was diverted up and over the East Overpass while first responders worked with injured patients and then firefighters assisted with scene cleanup.

Fireworks Display 2019 Sullivan Fairgrounds

This year`s fireworks display at the Sullivan Fairgrounds was another first for me…earlier in the day there was a rainstorm that apparently damaged the electronics board that controls the launch of the fireworks, and the company that has the contract for that detail in our city, apparently didn`t notice that damage til right before the timed launch, we everyone that drove there to watch and everyone that set up outside the perimeter  in their special place, had to wait and wait, and wait before we were able to see the beautiful fireworks bursts…at least there was a nice sunset and a few small shows by private citizens before the big show started to keep some of us entertained….

Fireworks 2019-0705 Sullivan Fairgrounds Mini Fountain Show at Mercy Bldg AVI 143

So as the sun began to set that evening, I had set up across the highway from the Mercy Building and there was a huge Thunderhead sitting above the Fairgrounds…apparently this isn`t why there was a delay tho, because when the fireworks show finally did start at 10:45 pm, those clouds were still up there…

…and the view behind me even sweeter…

…and then we waited some more..normally the show starts around 9:15 pm…this time it was an hour and a half late getting started…I would imagine some left since there was no communication between the company hired to launch the fireworks show and Sullivan City Officials to the people…since so many of us were in the dark anyway, so to speak, many of us remained in place and waited…finally it began about 10:45 pm…I shot it with two different cameras, one on a tripod and one on the hood of my truck, the latter did a pretty good job…the first 5 photos below were of the pre-show, fired off by citizens in the area of the police station before the Big Show started…those folks did a pretty good job in my opinion…

…and finally the Big Show started….

…and since it`s much easier to capture the colors and detail better in the finale once it starts, I shot it completely on video this time around…

Structure Fire July 3rd off Landon Road

I heard the tones drop for a structure fire at 384 Landon Road near the old welding shop, so I grabbed my camera and headed that way. Sullivan Fire Department wasn`t far behind me so I pulled over in the parking lot of the welding shop and let them all go by, then hoofed it down to the scene on foot. Turned out to be a large shed on fire, flames visible from Landon Road and I shot the first photo from the gravel lane, an opening in the trees showing the flames….

My buddy, Medic Tim Leasor, with MoBap EMS, took this next photo of the firefighters preparing to attack the fire and bleeding the air out of the hoseline…

..that is Damon Sumpter, the Captain of that crew, on the nozzle…I probably could have got there in time to shoot it as well, but was busy shooting the next photo, a reflection on the side of Pumper 854 that made it appear to be on fire as well…

…and I then walked up and started to photograph the scene…that is Tim ahead of me in the blue outfit…

…and then Damon turned his attention to the house siding, which had melted down from the intense heat of the flames, so he cooled down the siding as well…

…then when the firefighters got the shed doors open, they hit the flames inside the shed and continued to cool things down…

…one of the losses inside the shed was a zero turn mower….

Good job guys !!

Meramac Community Fair Parade 2019

I shot the Meramac Community Fair Parade again this year, from the area of Harry`s Tire again, an area where you generally do not have to worry about people stepping in front of you as you are shooting the floats and vehicles in the parade. I got to visit with Rita and George Boyle there as well, they always watch the parade there too…Rita is one of my classmates and good friends. Had Rita not pointed out the alligator in the pickup bed of one of the floats as it passed by, I prob would have completely missed it…thanks again Rita !!

There were some new characters in this year`s parade and I was able to photograph a few extras along the way as well…this year I shot video of the fire trucks and Sullivan High School Marching Band as they passed by…

Mer Com Fair Parade 2019-0619 Fire Trucks at Start AVI 42

Mer Com Fair Parade 2019-0619 Fire Trucks at Start AVI 43

This year, our Veterans began the parade following Patrick Johnson who was driving the Sullivan Police Car at the head of the line, they carried the colors down the streets….closely followed by the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Patrick is the Captain of Sullivan Police Department and he had a bit of a challenge just past Harry`s Tire when he met some eastbound traffic on Springfield Avenue…he veered the police car over to their lane and directed them to turn on to Mansion Street…they initially refused to turn, but he stood his ground and they eventually turned off and out of the way so the parade was able to resume…something I have never seen happen before. He would have had some good backup with the Veterans following closely behind him…

…I always try to get a good photo or 2 or 3 of our Veterans as they carry our colors down the street, grateful for their service to our country and big fan of our flag…this year I was also able to get some good photos of one of my buddies, Chris Huebner, who was probably carrying the US Marines Flag, since he is a Marine…

…and then Katie Creek, the 2018 Fair Queen in the yellow Camaro was next…

I`m not sure who set the order on the parade this year, they normally put the fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars out in the front, due to the fact that they like to use their sirens and air horns, but this year they were right behind Katie in the line up…sure hope she had some ear plugs in…

Officer Nathan Rhodes was leading the First Responders in the Dare Car, followed by the Swat Jeep, Ambulances, and Fire Trucks…SPD had a new Mascot riding in the Jeep`s Sunroof….

…and here comes the SHS Marching Band….

Mer Com Fair Parade 2019-0619 SHS Marching Band

…and shortly after this float, something scarey this way came….

I was like ” Yikes, he uh…sees me…” luckily for me, I`m sure, I knew who he was a few minutes after he passed by….but whew…for a few seconds there…

…and then this next float came along, and we were all trying to figure out the belly dancer outfit with the reptile ranch type float…as it passed by and I`m shooting video, Rita yelled out, ” James look at the alligator in the back of the truck ” so I spun around and shot the alligator too !

this year the parade was a little over an hour and not nearly as warm, making for a better parade !! see ya next year !!
